Year 10-12: Bring Your Own Device

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) – Year 10 to Year 12 program

Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College operates a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for Years 10 to 12.  Parents/carers are invited to purchase or supply a device for their child to bring to school. We have made special arrangements with Learning with Technology (LWT) and JB Hi-Fi who offer discounted prices for the lease or purchase of devices for our students.

What is BYOD?

  • BYOD, which stands for Bring Your Own Device, is a growing technological trend in both education and the corporate world.
  • BYOD recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal.
  • BYOD acknowledges technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements.
  • BYOD is intended to provide students and families with the freedom to choose technology solutions that best fit their individual circumstances.

How does BYOD work at Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College?

  • Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College invites all students to bring a fully charged computer to school.
  • Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College provides recommendations for specific makes and models available for purchase through a third-party vendor (Learning with Technology – LWT and JB Hi-Fi), which can be delivered directly to your home. Alternatively, you have the option to purchase a laptop that meets the school's device specifications from any source you prefer. Information about recommended devices can be found on the Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College website.
  • Students receive an induction session, as well as one-on-one sessions, to help them connect to Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College Wi-Fi, download applications, access school applications, and utilize printing services.
  • All windows device laptops that come out of the box must be setup must be setup for personal use and come with the windows operating system before attending induction sessions.
  • The school does not manage, support, own, or warranty the device; it is your responsibility. However, the school will make every effort to support laptop issues to the best of its ability.

What does the school not advise?

  • The school does not recommend the use of Chromebooks, Microsoft Surface devices, Apple or tablets/iPads.
  • The school does not provide support for laptops that have any Virtual Private Network (VPN) software installed.

To ensure smooth and reliable technology access and student support, we have set the following technical specifications for all personal devices.
