Welcome back to Term 2

After a refreshing two-week break, it was great to see all of our staff and students returning to school on Wednesday. Term Two provides an opportunity for all of our community to build on the amazing work of Term One and to really deepen our commitment to fostering belonging, curiosity and achievement within our students.

This term we welcome Mieleah Reichelt as our new Assistant Principal of Welcom Ngarrwa Secondary College.
Mieleah joins Brad and Adam in the Principal Team, providing expertise she has gained over her years in education in both primary and secondary schools.
We look forward to working with Mieleah as we grow our school, fostering a comminunity of healthly, happy & curious learners. We are sure everybody will make Mieleah feel welcome.

The first Monday of term was a professional learning day for all staff which focused on how we can ensure our students are supported in their learning and wellbeing. It provided a timely opportunity for us to refocus our attention on the most important goal we have as educators; to develop healthy, happy and curious young people.

It was fantastic to then see so many of our students and families on site on Tuesday for our first ever set of Parent Conferences. Over the course of the day, over 500 appointments were held, enabling our community to take another important step in establishing the co-operative and positive culture we know will enable success in our students. A huge thank you must go to all staff for their preparations before the day and to all families for taking the time to come in for these invaluable interactions.
We would also like to thank the various community groups who came out to run activation sessions with families and students. Walcom Ngarrwa is part of a growing community, and we see a key part of our role being to bring people together, so the opportunity to have sporting, social and community organisations with us in the afternoon was fantastic.

We have ANZAC day coming up this Thursday. There will be a brief ceremony held during period 5 on Wednesday to remember the sacrifices that have been made by many in the name of our country and its values. The school will be closed on Thursday as it is a public holiday.

On the near horizon we have another major milestone, with Year 7 Camp taking place during Week 3. Students will be travelling to Lady Northcote Discovery Camp for two nights of adventure and team building. Camps are a fabulous opportunity for students to build relationships with their peers and staff they can often be the launching pad for lifelong friendships. For students who are not attending camp, we will be running a modified program at the school to ensure they get many of the same social and leadership development opportunities that occur on camp.

So, with the term starting with a real sense of excitement, we look forward to a fantastic few weeks ahead.

Anzac Day Public Holiday

Anzac Day - 25th April

The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand

Anzac Day is observed on April 25 each year in Australia and New Zealand to honor war veterans. The first Anzac Day was commemorated on April 25, 1916, one year after troops from those two countries landed at the Gallipoli Peninsula in what is now Turkey during World War I.

Anzac Day is a day to remember all Australians and New Zealanders who gave their lives in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions around the world. It is also a time to remember and thank all those who have served and continue to serve in the Australian and New Zealand armies.

Anzac Day traditionally begins with a public commemorative service at dawn, the time of the original landing at Anzac Cove. In Australia, the Dawn Service is usually conducted by the Returned Services League of Australia with the involvement of the Australian Defence Force.

The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand

At Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College we will hold a brief ceremony during period 5 on Wednesday to remember the sacrifices that have been made by many in the name of our country and its values.

The school will be closed on Thursday as it is a public holiday.
